How to keep your dog calm during fireworks

Kennels

Calm Dogs, Cosy Nights

For us, fireworks might mark a celebration. For our dogs, the sudden bangs and bright flashes can make an ordinary evening feel unpredictable and unsettling.

At Bruce’s, we know that every dog responds differently. Some seek a familiar lap, others retreat to a quiet corner. Preparing ahead gives you time to understand what helps your dog and create an evening around their comfort.

Recognising Your Dog Needs Support

Fear isn’t always loud. You might notice trembling, pacing, panting or barking, but some dogs become unusually quiet, hide away or stay closer than usual.

Look for changes in their body language, too, such as tucked tails or ears held back. Recognising these signals can help you respond to their needs.

A Calmer Evening Starts Before Dark

Plan walks for daylight hours, before fireworks are likely to begin, and keep your dog indoors during displays.

Check that doors, windows and garden gates are secure, and that their microchip contact details are up to date.

If your dog has struggled with fireworks before, speak to your vet early. Having a plan in place can make the evening easier to manage.

Create a Familiar Place to Retreat

Choose a quiet spot where your dog already likes to rest. Add their usual bed, a favourite toy and familiar bedding, then give them time to enjoy the space before fireworks season arrives.

Keep it freely accessible so they can come and go. If they choose to hide there during a display, let them settle without coaxing them out.

Bring Out their Favourite Blanket

A soft blanket can make their resting place more inviting. Start with one they already enjoy, whether that means curling up on it or nestling beside it.

Introduce any new blanket beforehand and let your dog explore it at their own pace. The aim is a comfortable place they choose to use.

PAWD Calming Supplement

Alongside a quiet space, familiar comforts and gentle reassurance, a calming supplement may offer additional support. PAWD Calming is a daily powder containing lemon balm and passionflower, formulated to support relaxation and mixed into your dog’s water according to the serving instructions. Introduce it ahead of fireworks season as part of their usual routine, rather than waiting until the first bangs begin. Speak to your vet about whether it’s suitable for your dog, particularly if they take medication or experience significant anxiety.

Soothing Sounds to Set the Scene

Close the curtains to reduce bright flashes and try gentle music or familiar television sounds to help mask the noise outside.

Classical music or a quiet playlist can be options to explore. Begin before the fireworks start, keep the volume comfortable and watch how your dog responds.

Sound should help the room feel familiar. If your dog seems unsettled by it, look into getting them noise cancelling dog ear muffs.

Stay Close and Follow Their Lead

Make room in your evening to be there for your dog. Offer gentle reassurance if they seek it, and give them space if they prefer to rest alone.

A familiar chew or favourite toy may interest some dogs. Others won’t feel like eating or playing, and that’s okay. Avoid putting pressure on them to join in.

Your evening might include a film, a blanket and some quiet company. Let your dog’s comfort guide the plans.

Comfort Them After the Fireworks

Once the noise stops, give your dog time to settle. Keep familiar comforts available and return gently to their usual routine.

Every dog deserves to feel safe at home. A little preparation, somewhere familiar to retreat and reassurance when they need it can help you support them through fireworks season.
