Environmental Sustainability

Our contributions to our environment are at the heart of our commitment across our buildings, land & places and also our investments into nature, trees and landscaping.

As a countryside and land-based business orientated around animals, Bruce’s has a very direct connection with nature and an opportunity to enhance its positive contribution to the UK’s biodiversity.

We have made great strides already across plantation plans providing trees, hedge lines and gardens to contribute to the land in which we occupy. We recognise that each year, planting and long-term management could provide tonnes of CO2 capture.

Our future plans are continued, increased investments into our internal green infrastructure. This also includes the allocation and creation of microhabitats to support local wildlife. We’re planning some exciting projects and looking at ways we can further reduce our carbon footprint by using sustainable building materials.

Greener Energy Options

A big part of our approach is investigating how to use practical and pioneering renewable energy sources, whilst also reducing our heat and electricity usage.

We have made a conscious effort to purchase all future electrical equipment with an A energy rating. Our teams are encouraged to turn off light switches when not in use, wash all doggy towels on a low temperature and reuse rainwater for all planting areas.

We have started creating green roofs on our cabins which helps keep the cabins cool in summer and warm in winter, it’s also great for biodiversity!

Our future plan is to invest in what we have around us, using the open land and rolling hills we are looking to improve our energy sources with the use of sun, wind and heat, which will also reduce our carbon footprint.

Electric Transportation

We take pride in our home collection service for customers and we now have the opportunity to take this to the next level by going green.

Over the next 12 months, we will be introducing six electric buses to our fleet with a goal of being 100% electric by 2030.

We also care about giving our employees the opportunity to access more environmentally friendly ways of travelling so we will be implementing employee charging points, a car-sharing initiative, a cycle to work and an electric vehicle salary sacrifice scheme.

Investing In People

Bruce’s is committed to working with local schools and colleges to offer work experience and placements to students and young adults in education.

As a company, we offer apprenticeships and ongoing training to our teams to upskill their areas of expertise and further their knowledge. In addition, we’ve made a commitment to our teams through initiatives that support their physical and mental health and well-being. Bruce’s also offers greener initiatives as a reward for lengths of service and significant achievements.

We want to start working closer with underserved charities in our local communities to support and help animals and people.

Supply Chain & Recycling

We are committed to the three R’s of sustainability; Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle.

  • Reduce: By striving to work exclusively with environmentally conscious suppliers. Those who are able to report their carbon emissions and consider the onward journey of the products they sell.
  • Reuse: Re-commissioning materials to create our enrichment structures, from the larger scale structures to everyday activities and everything in between! We intend to continue to operate a cross-centre plan to pool and exchange resources in order to reduce waste.
  • Recycle: We are zooming in on the details within our recycling picture across our centres and aiming to nurture the culture within our team that supports our recycling initiatives.

Green Investment

At Bruce’s we want to ensure that our teams have the ability to invest in carbon friendly schemes alongside all the work we are doing as a company.

As mentioned in our transport section, we are conscious of providing our teams with environmentally friendly schemes that provide for long-term financial planning and modes of transport.

We want to ensure that we are sustainably looking at grant funding to help enable Bruce’s to achieve our financial and environmental goals.
