Picking a dog friendly picnic spot…

When planning a dog friendly picnic, selecting a safe spot is important to ensure a fun and safe outing for both you and your dog. Here’s our top tips to follow when choosing the perfect dog friendly picnic spot near you…

  • Dog friendly locations: Before setting off, ensure the picnic spot you’ve chosen allow dogs.
  • Shade and comfort: Consider the weather conditions and choose a spot with ample shade, especially on hot summer days.
  • Water source: If possible, pick a location with access to a clean water source. It’s always a good idea to pack your own too!
  • Check for hazards: Watch out for toxic plants, sharp objects, or any other dangers that could harm your pet.
  • Avoid crowded places: Busy and noisy areas may stress out your dog. Opt for quieter areas where your pup can relax and enjoy peacefully.

Don’t forget to pack the essentials such as a portable bowl and poo bags.

What food to pack for a dog friendly picnic…

There are plenty of dog friendly treats you and your dog can both enjoy. Our favourite human food that our dogs can eat include:

  • Cooked chicken (no seasoning)
  • Cheese
  • Carrots
  • Banana
  • Celery
  • Cucumber
  • Broccoli
  • Cauliflower
  • Strawberries
  • Apple slices
  • Sweet potato
  • Watermelon slices

To make it even fancier for your pooch you could make them their own Barkuterie board. Just like a charcuterie board, but for dogs! Arrange a colourful assortment of the above healthy, dog-safe snacks on a small tray for the to enjoy.

It is best to avoid bringing food that could be toxic to your dog, like grapes, chocolate, or raisins. You can learn more about food that’s harmful to dogs here.

Dog-Friendly Picnic Recipes

If you don’t want to share your snacks, here are some dog-friendly recipes you can bring along for your furry friend.

  • Banana and Carrot Dog Biscuits

These doggy biscuits combine mashed bananas and grated carrots. Two dog-friendly ingredients that are packed with vitamins and fibre. Simply mix the bananas and carrots with some oats, add a splash of water and bake until golden. They’re crunchy, portable, and perfect for outdoor picnic adventures.

  • Mini Meatloaf Muffins

A protein packed savoury treat thats easy to portion. Just mix 1 cup lean minced turkey or beef, ½ cup grated carrots, 1 egg and ½ cup rolled oats together. Press into a mini muffin tin, and bake at 180°C for 20–25 minutes. Wrap in some kitchen foil and keep in a cool bag until you are ready to eat.

  • Tuna & Sweet Potato Bites

Great for dogs who love fish. These bites are rich in omega-3s and are a great soft treat for older dogs. Mix 1 tin of tuna in water, ½ cup mashed sweet potato and 1 egg. Shape into small patties and bake at 180°C for 15 minutes until they are firm.

  • Chicken & Apple Picnic Balls

A sweet and savoury protein snack that’s easy to carry around. Mix 1 cup cooked shredded chicken, ½ apple (finely chopped, seeds/core removed),1 egg and 2 tbsp flour. Roll into balls and bake for 15–20 minutes until golden.
