1. Tatton Park

Location: Knutsford, Cheshire (approx. 15-minute drive from Altrincham)

Tatton Park, Managed by the National Trust is one of the crown jewels of dog walking near Altrincham. It has over 1,000 acres of parkland for you and your dog to roam. This historic estate blends open fields with ancient woodlands and tranquil lakes.

Dog Walking Highlights:

  • Parkland Walks: Ideal for off-the-lead fun in wide, open spaces.
  • Mere Lake Trails: Scenic routes by the water.
  • Woodland Adventures: Explore the woods & shaded paths. Perfect for hot summer days.

If you decide to visit Tatton Park be aware that dogs must be kept on leads in the formal gardens and near any livestock, but are allowed off the lead in the parkland area. Full details can be found on their dog walking guide page.

2. Dunham Massey

Location: Altrincham, Greater Manchester

Just a stone’s throw from Altrincham town centre and round the corner from our new day care centre you will find Dunham Massey. This is another National Trust site that’s a firm favourite with local dog owners. Choose from its formal gardens, wildflower meadows or ancient deer park. Surrounded by history and nature, it is a walk that’s as beautiful as it is relaxing.

Why Dunham Massey is great for dogs:

  • Deer Park Strolls: Scenic routes through open parkland. Just be mindful of the resident deer!
  • Shady Woodland Paths: Perfect for cooling down on a sunny day.
  • Bridgewater Canal Walk: A peaceful, flat trail ideal for older dogs or when you’re looking for an easy stroll.

Dunham Massey is also home to a dog-friendly courtyard café, so you can enjoy a hot drink and a rest.

Again Dunham Massey does require dogs to stay on leads in certain places. There are still plenty of large stretches of open grassland where your dog can run free, just check the rules before you take off the lead.

3. Spud Wood

Location: Lymm, Cheshire (A short 10 minute drive from Altrincham)

If you are looking for a quieter spot to take your walk, Spud Wood in Lymm could be the right choice for you. This stunning hideaway is filled with lush woodlands and has direct access to the Trans Pennine Trail. It’s a great choice for both strolls and dog owners looking for longer hikes.

Dog-walking perks at Spud Wood:

  • Off-the-Lead Fun: The secluded nature of the wood means plenty of safe space for free-running dogs.
  • Canal Path Walks: Enjoy the nearby Bridgewater Canal for a gentle, scenic route.
  • Quiet & Uncrowded: Fewer visitors mean a calmer and stress-free environment.

Lymm Village itself is dotted with plenty of dog-friendly pubs. Once you are done with your walk why not pop into The Golden Fleece or The Church Green for a well-earned drink and a tasty treat for your pup.
